Description
The name of this painting probably sounds familiar to you. This work of art, by Dutch painter Jan Steen, is one of the Mauritshuis' masterpieces. The work, "As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young" was painted between 1168 and 1670. You can see a cozy scene in the painting, with a father on the far right teaching his children to smoke the pipe. This is Jan Steen himself. In addition, if you look closely, there are little stories being told throughout the composition. The work is a real storyteller. Something Steen was known for. This old master, partly due to its playful round shape, will not only be an eye-catcher, but also become an occasion of fun conversations.
